When winter is making its way around, you'll want to make sure the exterior of your home is ready to take on any weather that comes your way, whether it be wind, rain, snow, hail or ice. The information you can read here will walk you through some of the different processes that you should go through to protect your home from damage.

Preparing your roof

You want to protect your roof from leaks, collapses and anything else that can lead to the need for roofing repairs. Trim trees back that may have heavy branches that can snap and land on the roof. Have any shingles or tiles that are damaged or missing taken care of. Have damaged flashing repaired. Put rock salt on any areas of the roof where ice dams are known to occur. Remove debris from the rain gutters that can lead to blockage during a rain storm.

Preparing your windows

You also want your windows to be ready for that winter weather. Check all the windows and make sure the weather stripping is in good condition; if not then take care of the issue as soon as possible. If any of your windows are cracked, or even have small breaks, then you are going to want to have them fixed sooner rather than later. This way, you won't find yourself dealing with rainwater pouring in your house all of a sudden. Plus, very cold weather can make a small crack suddenly turn into a huge issue.

Preparing your plumbing

If there is the chance of freezing temps where you live then have all exterior pipes that are exposed wrapped in insulation tape, or call a plumber to come out and properly insulate all of them for you. If possible, you should try to have boxes also built around certain pipes when it will further protect them. Keep in mind, if you are going to be leaving your home unoccupied during the winter with the water left on, you should have someone make sure the inside of the home is heated enough to protect inside plumbing as well.

Preparing your fencing

Take a walk around the perimeter of your fence and give it a little push near the posts to make sure it doesn't have any weak areas. If it does, you are going to want to have the fence reinforced as soon as possible. Otherwise, the fence will be at risk of greater damage if there are some strong winds that come up.
